Communities on the North Shore will be seeing more events and resources to stay connected, safe and resilient thanks to a $10,000 allocation from Devonport-Takapuna Local Board to North Shore Neighbourhood Support.

“We're all about making our community safer, more resilient and connected. So, this support from the board will help us to keep delivering events and resources to help foster that in the Devonport Takapuna area,” says North Shore Neighbourhood Support Coordinator, Tanya Svendsen.

Key initiatives the group will continue to carry out in the Devonport-Takapuna area include free pop-up events, like the June 2025 Belle Verde Playground Opening, where they worked closely with the board-funded Community Activators.

“North Shore Neighbourhood Support believes that building connections between neighbours is more important than ever, as streets continue to change. By hosting pop-ups and street parties with free coffee and food—like the Belle Verde opening—we create opportunities for people to meet, connect, and support each other. After all, your neighbour will often be the first person to help in an emergency. At the same time, we share practical emergency preparedness resources, helping everyone feel confident and ready if a potential big event occurs,” Svendsen explains.

Other initiatives organised by North Shore Neighbourhood Support include:

  • Safer Plates Events - Working with NZ Police, Community Patrol NZ, and Fire and Emergency NZ to replace standard number plate screws with anti-theft screws to help prevent plate theft and vehicle-related crime.
  • Community Hero Days - Family-friendly events with stalls by local services and organisations that support safety and resilience such as Fire and Emergency NZ, ANCAD, Fire and Emergency NZ, Surf Lifesaving NZ and local youth council groups such as Younite. The next Community Hero Day will be held at Milford Beach Reserve on Saturday, 29 November.
