  • $200,000 from Ōrākei Local Board has secured additional compliance support, targeting the local area
  • Two compliance wardens have started patrolling public places to improve safety
  • The wardens can issue infringement notices to those not complying with council bylaws

Two council compliance wardens have been assigned specifically to the Ōrākei Local Board area thanks to its funding.

Sofie Oseid and Amin Amin are both competent and confident wardens who joined Auckland Council’s community safety team this year and have worked primarily in the central city before September, when they moved across to patrol in Ōrākei.

“It’s a good area from what we’ve seen so far,” says Sofie.

“We are looking forward to seeing more of the area and seeing how it changes over the seasons. More people are outside when it’s sunny rather than when it’s rainy and cold.”

Some of the activities they’ll be keeping an eye on include parking on beaches, dog bylaws and registration, anti-social behaviour, illegal street trading, damage to parks and council-owned land, freedom camping and alcohol bylaws.

Where individuals are breaking bylaws, the wardens can hand out infringement notices or collect information for notices to be issued afterwards.

Sofie and Amin are making their way around key stakeholders in the community to get a better understanding of any concerns they should be aware of in different neighbourhoods.

“Our ultimate goal is to make sure everyone is safe,” says Amin.

“The people we’ve met at the business associations are lovely. Having a relationship with them makes our job much easier because they can let us know the issues to look out for.”

The pair have a good relationship with the police and work closely with them when appropriate. They are also meeting with local community patrol (CPNZ) groups in the area to see how they can support each other.

Compliance wardens always patrol in pairs and are kitted out with body cameras and two-way radios.

Some issues fall outside of Sofie and Amin’s jurisdiction, such as noise complaints and actions taking place on private property.

If you have any concerns about activities in public places in your area, call the council on 09 301 0101 to report it, or log it on council’s report a problem page.

If you or anyone else is in immediate danger, call emergency services on 111.
