The Epsom Library will undergo a multi-million-dollar upgrade – following a successful Fix and Finish Fund application.

The Albert-Eden Local Board will receive $1.5 million towards the $3.2 million needed for a comprehensive building redesign, that includes the replacement of the existing roof, as well as a full internal refurbishment.

Albert-Eden Local Board Chair Kendyl Smith says it’s a great outcome for the community and library users.

“This a good win for our library users in Epsom, Mt Eden, Remuera and the other neighbouring suburbs, as we’ll have the much-needed roof repair and drainage issues sorted a year ahead of schedule thanks to the Fix and Finish Funds.
“The decision to close the Point Chevalier Library due to water ingress and air quality issues highlighted the need to ensure Albert-Eden libraries are looked after, the Point Chev closure has made it difficult for the community. By fast-tracking the Epsom upgrades, we’ll have the upgrades in place by mid-2027, instead of mid-2028, which will make a considerable difference to library users.”

The Fix and Finish Fund resulted from the Long-term Plan 2024-2034 and the sale of Auckland International Airport Ltd shares held by the legacy Auckland City and Manukau areas.

Local boards from those areas were eligible to apply to the fund, which provides one-off funding to community projects.

The popular, but ageing Epsom Library, had 131,000 visits and 221,000 loaned items over the 2024-2025 financial year.

It’s expected the upgrade work will get underway from July 2026.
