Growth in Auckland isn’t just about big council projects like new roads, major transport initiatives, or improved water services.
Local boards also fund projects, upgrades and facilities that build better neighbourhoods and help create great places to live.
Take a look at five local gems funded and supported by Kaipātiki Local Board in the list below, then check them out for yourself on your next lunchbreak, staycation or weekend daytrip.
1. Kauri Glen Reserve
Fancy a treetop walk through mature kauri forest on your lunch break? This gorgeous 60-metre-high destination bridge is just a stone’s throw from Birkenhead and Northcote and is perfect for your next insta snap or relaxing forest bathing session to unplug from the daily grind. A true North Shore treasure that offers something for everyone. It’s step-free too!
2. Kaipātiki Project EcoHub
If you're keen to help your local environment while learning some new skills and making friends with like-minded people in your community, this board-funded, custom-built eco building and native tree nursery is a great place to start. Alongside regular workshops by board partner Kaipātiki Project on everything from pest trapping to river restoration, there is also a well-stocked tea and biscuit pantry, making this a truly welcoming community space, ideal for young, old or in-between.
3. Tuff Crater Path
Natural features don’t come much more unique than this ancient volcanic crater that encircles a mangrove-filled wetland and the best way to appreciate it is on this 2.6-kilometre step-free walking track developed and funded by the board. Watch out for some great birdlife and epic views of the harbour and city skyline while you get your steps in.
4. Beach Haven Coastal Walkway
It’s been a local secret that Beach Haven has one of the shore’s most serene stretches of coastline, and this recently upgraded step-free walkway now makes this accessible to all Aucklanders. For a short trip, go directly to the rather magnificent lookout at Shepherds Park, or make it a proper outing by continuing around the coast over lovely boardwalks and gently winding forest paths through to Hellyers Creek.
5. Birkenhead Pool and Leisure Centre
Part of the picturesque Birkenhead War Memorial Park, this lesser-known sports and leisure facility is one of Auckland’s best, with first-class climbing walls, heated outdoor pool, fully equipped fitness centre (with tyre flipping!) and some super knowledgeable staff keen to help you meet your fitness goals or get the kids active with their Education Outside the Classroom service. They are also custodians of the very fine skatepark, pump track and playground, which are nearby and well worth a visit on a fine day.
