Waiheke football fans can look forward to increased year-round use of the popular Onetangi Sports Park thanks to an allocation of $750,000 from Auckland Council’s Fix and Finish fund to the Waiheke Local Board.
The allocation will fund upgrades to the Onetangi Sports Park’s number three football field and will include additional lighting to increase evening availability and turf renewals to improve drainage for fewer closures during rainy periods.
The recent upgrades are great news for Waiheke United AFC, which is based at Onetangi Sports Park.
“This is something Waiheke football fans have been eager to see,” says Club President Gareth Jenkinson.
“Over the recent years, our membership has grown significantly, placing heavy demand on our pitches, which are showing the strain of constant use. Thanks to the board, we’ll soon have another high-quality space available for evening training. At present we have to share with rugby, so this means both rugby and football pitches can be managed properly and maintained in good condition for year-round play.
"This project has been part of our long-term strategy for nearly a decade, so it’s especially rewarding to see the Local Board and Auckland Council recognising and supporting the needs of our community. Waiheke United AFC see this as a vital step forward in building modern, sustainable facilities for the future of our community.”
The Waiheke Local Board hopes to complete the upgrades by mid-2026, weather permitting.
This upgrade is one of thirteen local board projects across Auckland and Manukau that will be fixed or finished as part of the $20 million Fix and Finish funding boost championed by Mayor Wayne Brown through his Mayoral Proposal.
