From coast to countryside, Rodney’s parks offer something for everyone

Growth in Auckland isn’t just about big council projects like new roads, major transport initiatives, or improved water services.

Local boards also fund projects, upgrades and facilities that build better neighbourhoods and help create great places to live.

These five parks show how Rodney Local Board is helping make green spaces serve communities at every stage of development, supported by investment, local energy, and future-focused planning.

1. Green Road – Rodney’s future super park in the making

Imagine a park as large as Cornwall Park – that's the long-term vision for Green Road park in Dairy Flat. A working farm, it’s now transitioning into a recreational space.

It’s home to the North Harbour Pony Club and the North Shore Model Aero Club, while community group Friends of Green Road Park group leads planting and restoration efforts, with thousands of native trees planted to enhance biodiversity.

The park is open for walking and exploring, with the board funding key developments including a small car park with bollard access, and ongoing footpath construction for walking, biking, and horseback riding.

2. Glasgow Park – a community space that’s flourishing

In the heart of Waimauku, Glasgow Park is a much-loved green space that continues to grow alongside its community.

The park offers a large open field perfect for dog-walking, picnics, and casual games – and it’s also home to a colourful playground sponsored by the Lions Club - showing the power of local partnerships in creating welcoming places for all.

Glasgow Park is a thriving hub for the Waimauku community, and one to put on the must visit list!

3. Mathesons Bay Reserve – where nature, play and coastline meet

One of north Rodney’s hidden gems, Mathesons Bay Reserve blends coastal charm with well-designed facilities and upgrades. It’s a favourite among families, walkers and water lovers alike.

The reserve features a family friendly safe swimming beach, with calm waters protected by a reef. In summer, a floating pontoon is anchored offshore for added fun.

A large grassy area sits just behind the beach, perfect for picnics and casual games, and there’s a well-equipped playground for younger kids nearby, as well as a scenic bush walk along the Kohuroa Stream.

Facilities include public toilets, changing rooms, cold outdoor showers, and two parking areas. There’s also a loop walk, perfect for those wanting to explore a bit more.

4. Shelly Beach Reserve – treasure hunting and play

Nestled on the eastern side of South Head Peninsula, Shelly Beach Reserve is a serene coastal destination that has undergone significant upgrades to enhance its recreational appeal.

Thanks to board funding, the reserve features three upgraded play areas for all ages including a treasure-filled sandpit, fitness equipment and a large basketball court. The foreshore and upper playgrounds are a fun and active destination for local families.

With a foreshore jetty, boat ramp, barbecues, toilets and showers, plus scenic walking trails, Shelly Beach Reserve is an inviting blend of nature, activity, and relaxation.

5. Riverhead War Memorial Park – a modern hub with deep community roots

Set within the fast-growing Riverhead township, Riverhead War Memorial Park is now a well-loved recreational and community space thanks to smart investment and thoughtful design.

The playground features twin adventure towers, musical play, and equipment forall ages, with colourful perch seating.

Extensive sport facilities cover everything from tennis and netball to rugby, cricket, and bowls with a new skatepark underway that will feature sculptural elements by artist Levi Hawken.

Ongoing significant investment from the board and council has refreshed hard courts and amenities, making the park a complete hub for local gatherings, active play, and club sport.

More than green space, these parks show how investment grows community

Backed by local board support and community care, these parks aren’t just amenities, they’re part of what makes Rodney a vibrant place to live, grow and belong.
