Ōtāhuhu’s town centre is set for a refresh, thanks to funding secured through Auckland Council’s Fix and Finish fund.
The Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board advocated for the streetscape project and received $1.5 million.
Thirteen eligible local boards submitted high-impact proposals. In total, over $57 million in bids were submitted, with $20 million available. Each bid was assessed on project priority, community benefit, and value for money.
Ōtāhuhu streetscape project supports local life
Funding supports the Ōtāhuhu streetscape upgrade, focusing on completing the town centre main road.
A streetscape is everything that shapes how a street looks, feels, and works, from footpaths and lighting to signs, green space, and places to sit.
In Ōtāhuhu, streets aren’t just for getting from A to B, they’re where people connect, gather, work and go to school nearby, and live daily life. A better streetscape means safer journeys for kids, cooler spaces in summer, and places that reflect pride and culture.
While original plans were impacted by COVID-related budget cuts, the board worked with Auckland Transport on a revised design. These improvements build on earlier work (like stormwater upgrades) will help supporting local businesses, strengthening the town centre’s role in South Auckland, and delivering social, economic, and cultural benefits grounded in mana whenua leadership.
Acting board chair Walter Togiamua says, “The board is pleased to see $1.5 million invested in the Ōtāhuhu streetscape upgrade, a much-needed improvement for a busy and vibrant town centre.”
What is the Fix and Finish Fund?
Established as part of Auckland Council’s Long-term Plan 2024–2034, the Fix and Finish Fund was made possible through the sale of Auckland International Airport shares previously held by the legacy Auckland City and Manukau councils.
While not all projects could be fully funded, every recipient board now has the means to progress a key local initiative, from new facilities and upgraded streetscapes to improved sports infrastructure.
