Two young Papakura brothers have shown that you’re never too young to make a difference when it comes to caring for the environment.
Boston and Parker Pickett, students at ACG Strathallan Primary, spent their July school holidays collecting rubbish from local waterways. Over several days, the brothers filled nine large bags with litter, which their mum later delivered to the local dump.
It’s not the first time the pair have taken action. Last summer, Boston and Parker collected 18 full black sacks of rubbish from the same streams, proving that their commitment is more than just a one-off.
Their efforts have now been formally recognised. At a special presentation held at Papakura Local Board office last week, the brothers received Volunteer Recognition Certificates. Presented to them by Local Board Chair Brent Catchpole, who praised the boys for their commitment and community spirit.
“Boston and Parker have shown real dedication to our community and the environment. They’ve stepped up in their own time during the school holidays to do something that benefits everyone, they deserve to be celebrated.”
“Every bag of rubbish collected, every stream cleaned, and every tree planted adds up. Boston and Parker’s work is part of the bigger picture and the board wants to acknowledge the boys for their time and wonderful contribution to our environment,” says Catchpole.
The Local Board’s recognition of Boston and Parkers work highlights the importance of community-led action. Protecting the environment is one of the Papakura Local Boards key priorities, with investment in planting, steam restoration and pest management. The Pickett brothers efforts fit directly into that wider commitment.
Papakura Local Board supports a wide range of environmental projects to help create healthier waterways and green spaces. From funding tree planting to backing stream clean-ups, the board works alongside schools, community groups, and volunteers.
