Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board member Peter McGlashan is stepping down from the board, after six years (2019-2025) of serving the community.
The former Black Cap, playing ODI and T20 cricket for New Zealand, served two terms, and was the lead for filming, events, and activity applications on local parks and facilities requiring regulatory approval.
Sustainable transport
Peter was deeply passionate about the benefits of transport and active modes, played a key role in understanding and advocating for public transport projects for the community and helping other local board members with decisions around transport projects.
Streets for the people
With Peter’s transport nous, he led two Innovating Streets trials in Glen Innes and Onehunga. Both these resulted in permanent changes for the areas, and improved connections for the community.
Community-focused
Peter is a proud Glen Innes resident, and was regarded as being a kind, friendly, constituent-focused local board member, always open to robust discussions with locals and committed to community engagement, and being present in the community.
He was the board representative for the Tāmaki Recreation Centre Trust, Glen Innes Business Association, Play Plan lead, alternate lead for the Tāmaki Estuary Environmental Forum, and championed the EcoMatters Bike Hub in Glen Innes and throughout Tāmaki Makauraru.
Chair Maria Meredith says Peter will leave a lasting impression.
“It was an absolute pleasure to have Peter on the board for the past six years, he brought a fantastic calm and pragmatic approach to decision-making, and his transport knowledge was of a high standard that helped our entire local board understand more about transport.
“We wish Peter and his family all the best with his future and the next steps, and it was a privilege to have him serve our community over the past six years.”
A lasting legacy
Peter’s six years at the board included difficult times with Covid and weather related impacts from 2023, but he played a key role in bringing the board and community together, with his knowledge and advocacy for transport, playground infrastructure and positivity for the future of Maungakiekie-Tāmaki.
