Waitākere Ranges Local Board member Liz Manley is stepping down after three years of service.
Liz’s connections to local communities and her love of the Waitākere Ranges led her to stand for the Waitākere Ranges Local Board.
“I’ve always had a strong drive to support local communities,” she says, “and many of the professional roles I’ve had in my life reflect that.”
Liz is grateful for the opportunities to get to know more of the groups that are active in a variety of contexts across the Waitakere Ranges Local Board area and will remain involved with several of them.
“There are so many unsung heroes doing amazing work across the Waitākere Ranges local board area,” she says.
Progressing the Waitākere Ranges Heritage Area Deed of Acknowledgement is one of her highlights from the term and another is the Dark Sky project.
That work has seen a group of passionate locals preparing a pre-application to Dark Sky International to have the Waitākere Ranges recognised as an International Dark Sky Place, with support from the local board.
“I have enjoyed the dark sky mahi and it’s still under way. We made a lot of progress and I think it’s really valuable,” she says.

Liz has also valued her role on council’s Manukau Harbour Forum.
“The opportunity to be on the Forum is very important. Manukau Harbour is such a big part of our local board area. It’s there for our communities to love and enjoy but it also needs to be protected. The Forum brings together all the boards bordering the harbour, and they work together pretty well.”
Board chair Greg Presland was saddened to hear of Liz’s decision to step down.
“I wish her well and express the hope that in the future she will again seek office at Local Government. Super City needs representatives like her,” says Greg.
