Following challenges with road access, winter weather and site safety, Auckland Council will soon continue its work removing storm-affected homes in Karekare.
From November, seven homes will be removed via Karekare Road, including the 6 remaining Category 3 homes on Karekare Road, and one on Watchmans Road.
We’re working closely with Auckland Transport to make sure this work lines up with plans to clear debris from Pohutukawa Glade - the goal is to reduce disruption and get everything done more efficiently for the community.
To help with this:
-
Home removal trucks and materials will be kept off the main road
-
We’ll carefully manage home removal truck movements to avoid congestion.
The final two homes on Lone Kauri Road will be removed in the new year. These sites are a bit more complex due to access issues caused by nearby electricity poles, and we’ll be working with Vector to find a solution.
What's happening next?
At the end of October/early November:
-
archaeological assessments will be completed at a few properties
-
any required asbestos removal is expected to begin in the last week of October.
Once we’re ready to begin removal works:
-
We’ll contact previous homeowners directly
-
Nikau (our contractor) will send official notifications to neighbours.
-
We’ll also share updates via the community WhatsApp group.

As always, Erik Lopeti is your key contact for home removal queries, and will work closely with Nikau, our local home removal contractors: erik.lopeti@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz.
