Nathan Homestead Pukepuke in Manurewa is due to re-open to the public after an extensive restoration, ensuring this historic taonga will be available for Aucklanders to use and enjoy for years to come.

After a 14-month restoration project, Nathan Homestead will re-open to the public on 13 October 2025.

Manurewa Local board chair Matt Winiata says he’s thrilled the homestead has been upgraded and enhanced for Aucklanders to enjoy for many years to come.

“This restoration project is a significant investment in preserving the historic and functional integrity of Nathan Homestead while ensuring it meets modern standards for safety, accessibility and usability.

“The homestead is an important site for the Manurewa community and we look forward to welcoming back Aucklanders and community groups into the enhanced homestead for them to use and enjoy.

“There will be an event celebrating the homestead’s reopening on November 22, which Aucklanders are welcome to attend.”

The renewal programme included essential repair, maintenance, and enhancement work. This included accessibility improvements, fire safety upgrades, asbestos removal, full exterior and interior repainting, weathertightness improvements, interior layout alterations and refurbishment, and the installation of an interior lift.

It also included seismic strengthening carried out on the building to meet the legislative requirements at the time.

The building

Nathan Homestead is a two-storey heritage unreinforced structure originally erected in 1925. It features five prominent brick chimneys, a perimeter of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls, along with a timber mid-floor and timber truss roof structure.

Taryn Crewe, General Manager of Parks and Community Facilities says the much- needed restoration work future-proofs the homestead.

“Nathan Homestead has undergone a significant and quality renewal that will stand it in good stead for many more years.

“I’m proud of all those who worked to future-proof this historical and culturally important building so it can continue to be a taonga to Manurewa and Auckland.”
