A smart energy partnership between Auckland Council group and Vector, that has lit up the Auckland Harbour Bridge daily for the past eight years, is coming to a close.

Once the agreement ends in 2027, Vector will step away from Vector Lights, which will open the opportunity for a new partner to come forward.

Powered by a mix of solar, battery, and peer-to-peer technology, Vector Lights has placed the Auckland Harbour Bridge in the spotlight during annual celebrations like New Year’s Eve, Auckland’s Anniversary and Anzac Day.

Hundreds of other events and good causes have been highlighted through innovative light shows across the bridge, watched by many.

Councillor Richard Hills, who has provisionally been re-elected to represent the North Shore, says Vector Lights has been a shining example of a partnership done well – with the bonus of entertaining Aucklanders and visitors to our city too.

“Each light show has become a celebration of Auckland’s past and present, bringing thousands of people together through storytelling on significant occasions like Matariki, Christmas, Pride and the World of Cultures.”

“I acknowledge the outstanding partnership with Vector and trust another partner can help us light the bridge and continue celebrating our awesome city,” Councillor Hills says.

Vector’s chief people and communications officer Sarah Williams says Vector is proud of what the bridge installation has contributed to Auckland and is grateful to have worked with the Auckland Council group and Waka Kotahi NZTA to make it a success.

“It’s provided a unique Auckland experience over many years, enhancing our harbour and creating an attraction for locals and visitors alike, with a smart energy solution behind it,” Ms Williams says.

“As the partnership comes to an end, we will consider how we continue to invest in Auckland communities, and we wish the council ongoing success with the bridge lighting."

Using state-of-the-art technology, the lighting system uses more than 96,000 LED lights and 200 floodlights positioned across the bridge. It is powered by 630 solar panels and a large storage battery, generating more than 600,000 kwh of solar energy to date – enough power to charge 10,000 electric vehicles.

Max Hardy, Director of Group Strategy and Chief Executive’s Office at Auckland Council, says the council is now exploring opportunities to continue lighting the bridge beyond 2027.

"We’ll continue working closely with Vector during the final two years of the partnership to ensure a smooth transition,” Hardy says. “Our goal is keeping the Harbour Bridge shining bright – as a symbol of creativity and innovation.”
