One of the main gateways to Aotea / Great Barrier, Tryphena Wharf is back to business as usual after a full refurbishment.
The wharf services regular passenger, car and freight ferries, and is ready in time for the busier summer months.
Auckland Transport and its contractors have replaced pine components with more resilient hardwood and steel elements, rebuilding the wharf within its existing footprint at the island’s main ferry terminal.
This renewal has created a longer lasting wharf which is more durable with better strength to manage large ferries manoeuvring and unloading. The new wharf has an expected life of around 50 years.
The new materials are less prone to warping and more resilient to marine borer and toredo worm infestations than the original pine wood.
The result is a low maintenance, long life facility capable of with-standing harsh weather conditions and sustained use for many years into the future.
Works started in early 2025 and were completed in September, slightly later than expected due to weather delays and additional future proofing work.
The need for this renewal was picked up in Auckland Transport’s two-yearly condition assessment of all its owned wharves, noting that Tryphena Wharf had aged to a point where a comprehensive rebuild was a priority.
