The Epsom community was one of the hardest hit after the 2023 storms – nearly half of the properties that registered for the categorisation programme qualified for a buy-out. In July 2025 a recovery planning steering group was established with representatives from local community organisations including Changing Minds, Earth Action Trust and Epsom Chinese Association.

As part of Epsom’s ongoing flood recovery and future planning, a creative initiative is bringing residents together through art, storytelling and a shared hope for the future.

Turning over a new leaf is a community mural capturing Epsom’s collective vision for a resilient, inclusive future. The project invites residents to take part in a hands-on, creative process, painting and writing their hopes for Epsom onto handcrafted plywood leaves.

Inspired by te taiao (the natural world) and the puka leaf, a Māori symbol of healing and protection, the mural brings people together to paint leaves in shades of green and write their wishes for Epsom’s future. Each leaf begins with the prompt: “My wish for Epsom in the future is…”.

The project’s first outing at the Epsom Moon Festival was welcomed by people of all ages and backgrounds, including children and their parents, elders from the Chinese community, and adults from Ranfurly Care. Co-location with community organisations focused on flood resilience, neighbourhood support and climate action fostered connection and creativity.

Catalyse, a Mt Eden-based community engagement agency who is leading the initiative, is seeking hosts for upcoming leaf creation stations at community events. To get involved, email connect@catalyse.co.nz.

Upcoming events:

  • Flood Resilience Treasure Hunt, Epsom Community Library, Saturday 1 November
  • St Andrews Strawberry Fair, St Andrews Church, Saturday 8 November
