Auckland Council and Aktive have formed a strategic partnership to work together to increase sport and physical activity opportunities and outcomes for Tāmaki Makaurau and Aucklanders.
Auckland Council Director of Community Rachel Kelleher says the new agreement sets out goals that both partners can work towards, so all Aucklanders have access to quality recreation and sport opportunities into the future.
“We are both committed to addressing regionwide needs, ensuring money is spent wisely, and focusing on areas where the need is greatest. This partnership will bring improved wellbeing and more connection in our communities through sport and physical activity,” says Ms Kelleher.
The Agreement is focused on six Strategic Priorities: partnerships, aligning planning, prioritisation and investment in Auckland’s sport and recreation facility network, maximising the impact of our collective investment and increasing participation, improving access, and strengthening the overall role of play, sport and recreation in the lives of Aucklanders.
Aktive Chief Executive, Jennah Wootten says it is a privilege to have the council confirm Aktive as its primary regional sport and recreation strategic partner.
“Since our establishment in 2013, Aktive has enjoyed a strong and impactful partnership with Auckland Council. The signing of this strategic partnership agreement formalises this and signals an exciting new chapter, grounded in mutual trust and confidence that have been built over the past decade,” says Ms Wootten.
“In recent years, our collaboration has gained significant momentum, leading to impactful outcomes that provide a solid foundation for continued growth. We are excited to build on this progress and unlock new possibilities through the strategic and purposeful efforts of our two organisations.”
Wootten acknowledges the significant contribution of both elected members and council staff in enabling the step change in progress in recent years.
“The current Long-term Plan presents an unprecedented opportunity for community sport and recreation and Aktive is looking forward to working with our Auckland Council colleagues to realise this.”
The Strategic Partnership Agreement is guided by the Auckland Plan, Long-term Plan 2024-34, Manaaki Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland Open Space, Sport and Recreation Strategy, as well as Aktive’s 2040 Strategic Direction and 2024-28 Strategic Plan.
