Summer in Tāmaki Makaurau; that glorious time when the barbecues fire up, jandals slap the pavement, and dogs across the region drag their humans out the door with tails wagging like wind turbines.
With the long days and warm nights rolling in, it’s prime time to explore Auckland’s incredible network of parks and trails, just don’t forget to pack the leash and the poo bags.
From 1 August 2025, Auckland’s updated dog access rules kicked in to make sure everyone – two-legged and four-legged – can enjoy our outdoor spaces safely. Most regional parks remain dog-free to protect precious native wildlife like the northern dotterel and fairy tern, but there are loads of local parks and reserves where your dog can stretch their legs off-leash. Jut remember, dogs are prohibited from sports fields and playgrounds.
So, grab the lead, some water, and your sense of adventure and hit the outdoors; your dog will love you for it.
Here are some top summer walks to explore this summer that’ll keep you and your pal smiling and out of trouble.
Warkworth Showgrounds, Rodney: a 1.9-kilometre loop that’s a breeze to walk or run your dog; it’s peaceful, green, and easy on the paws; the track loops past community spaces and the heritage lane, offering a perfect blend of countryside calm and convenience.
Come bring your dog to enjoy the greenery of Warkworth Showgrounds and even catch a rugby game or two.
Sandbrook Reserve, Ōtara-Papatoetoe: this leafy neighbourhood gem is perfect for casual strolls and fetch sessions; with plenty of open space and a relaxed community vibe, it’s the ideal place for social dogs and owners.
Waiatarua Reserve, Remuera: a fan favourite, this wetland circuit offers a mix of leash-on and leash-off fun; there’s even a dog swimming hole, paradise for pooches who like to paddle; just remember to reattach that leash near the viewing platforms and wetland centre.
Nothing beats a summer stroll with your best friend at Waiatarua.
Macleans Park, Howick: expansive, hilly, and full of native trees, this is one of the city’s best off-leash adventures; bring water, good shoes, and a ball your dog won’t immediately lose in the bush.
Sanders Reserve, Paremoremo – one of New Zealand’s best dedicated off-leash dog parks; with 41 hectares of stunning views of the Waitematā Harbour, trail loops, water stations and open green spaces, it’s a doggy paradise. The 16.5-hectare off-leash zone is a must-do, a great place to roam outdoors with your dog – follow the Sanders Dog Lovers Path from the main car park; if wandering along the walkway that follows the stream and native bush, keep your dog on-leash in this zone.
Watea Reserve, Sandringham – a suburban surprise – explore the boardwalks and path to meander amongst planted areas and open lawns; this a hidden gem for easy off-leash play; it’s also home to a small wetland and plenty of birdlife – so keep an eye out for tūī and pukeko between throws of the ball.
Corban Reserve – Henderson – a social hub for energetic dogs, with agility equipment, large grassy areas and a fully fenced dog exercise area; it’s great for training, play and a chat with fellow dog lovers; it's a short stroll to Opanuku Reserve.
Fresh air, shady paths, and space to roam, Corban Reserve is a perfect for a summer walk for you and your dog.
Opanuku Path, Henderson – a peaceful streamside stroll through native bush where you can spot tūī, fantails and kingfisher takes you through to Henderson Park where there is a great dog exercise area; follow the path around the sports fields but remember, keep dogs off the sports fields, please!
So get out there and enjoy some of the options and remember, even when your dog’s off-leash, they must always be under control.
Check the Auckland Council website before heading out – rules differ by park. Because when everyone follows the leash laws, summer stays fun for everyone – paws, people and wildlife alike we all share the city with.
