A once-empty patch of land in Glen Eden has been transformed into a vibrant new playground, filling a gap in local play spaces and bringing joy to families in the community.

Funded by Waitākere Ranges Local Board, the Koroī / Clayburn Reserve Playground officially opened last week, drawing hundreds of excited locals who turned out to celebrate the occasion.

The new playground features a treehouse play module, accessible carousel, “twig stack” climbing frame, swings and slides, a “learn to ride” track, the “dancing snake”, and a basketball half court. There are a few seats scattered around, as well as a picnic set under the shade—offering something for everyone.

Waitākere Ranges Local Board chair Mark Allen says the new playground supports housing growth locally is a fantastic addition to the community.

“The playground brings everyone together. It celebrates our local history, nature, and the importance of shared spaces where people of all ages and with different abilities can connect and play.”

The name Koroī was gifted to the reserve by Te Kawerau ā Maki. Koroī refers to the cone of the kauri tree—a nod to the towering kauri forests that once covered the Glen Eden area.

The playground’s design was shaped in collaboration with Te Kawerau ā Maki, and students and teachers from Glen Eden Primary School, ensuring it reflects local identity and meets the needs of local tamariki.

Chair Allen says the board is proud to see the project completed after working closely with the community to bring the vision to life.

“This playground has been designed with the community, for the community. Their ideas and feedback have helped shape a space that truly belongs to the people who live here.”

Koroī / Clayburn Reserve is surrounded by housing, with many sections being developed into multiple townhouses, and is close to the multi-storey apartments on the corner of Glenview and Waikumete Roads.

The Waitākere Ranges Play Provision Assessment 2021 identified Clayburn Reserve as a suitable location for a new playground to address the shortage of play spaces in eastern Glen Eden, including features such as courts or wheeled play areas.

Waitākere Ranges Local Board approved the concept plan of the playground in April this year, with $686,598 allocated for the development of the park.
