Manurewa is about to turn up the volume with Manurewa Rhythms, a vibrant new event designed by youth, for youth.
On Friday 13 February 4-7pm, head over to Netball Manurewa Canopy, 95 Browns Road for a celebration of creativity and flourishing talent.
This Manurewa Local Board initiative is more than just about music and dance for the kids — it’s about a movement in the making, where young voices lead, talent shines and the community come together in a safe, alcohol-free space.
By showcasing local talent and partnering with community organisations, Manurewa Rhythms builds on young people’s aspirations by providing a stepping stone for future careers in the arts.
Don’t miss out on a breathtaking performance by New Zealand’s up and coming MC/lyricist, Idol Essence. Think the next Ladi6 from her Sheelahroc days. Idol Essence delivers a crisp flow that is deeply honest and authentic, and without a doubt will have your head bobbing.

Also lined up to dominate your aural senses is Tribe of Ope – a seriously talented whānau who passionately pour their love for music into their performances. Get ready for hair-raising familial feels and festive tracks that will get your hands in the air.
Manurewa Local Board Chair, Heather Andrew is excited for the event to kick off.
“We wanted to contribute to the Manurewa youth scene in a way that will genuinely embrace our young people,” says Chair Andrew.
“This event strategy is designed to tune into youth needs and wants and eventually have them run the show with our support.”
“Ideally, we would love for the event to be recognised as Manurewa’s cultural heartbeat for youth — an exciting and aspirational experience that families and schools proudly support,” she says.
The goal is for Manurewa Rhythms to become the flagship youth event for the area, with a focus on:
- Youth voice and brand:
Creating an authentic, youth-driven identity that resonates with high school students and young creatives. - Audience insights and growth:
Listening to what inspires local youth and evolving the event to stay relevant and exciting. - Local pride and impact:
Providing pathways into creative industries, fostering confidence, and positioning the event as a positive alternative for young people.
Over time, the ideal outcome is for local young people to run the stages and join the production team to help deliver the event.
Expect high-energy performances from Idol Essence and Tribe of Ope, with an iconic vibe and certified bangers. This event is about more than entertainment – it’s about shaping a legacy that reflects the energy and aspirations of Manurewa’s next generation.
