Beat the heat at Auckland’s favourite open-air pool, Parnell Pools.

Long sunny days are back, and so is the joy of cooling off in one of Auckland’s many pools and splash zones. Whether it’s a lazy float in the sun, a lane-swim before work, or your little one’s first splash, our pools are open and ready to welcome everyone - and the best part? Kids aged 16 and under swim for free at all Auckland Council pools. Check out the full list of free-swimming locations today.

Something for everyone

From shaded toddler paddling pools to open-air swimming lanes, Auckland’s network of indoor and outdoor pools has something for every swimmer and splash-lover. In the west, families gather at West Wave to ride the wave pool and whoosh down the hydroslide, while in the east, Ōtāhuhu and Lloyd Elsmore Park offer warm, shallow water perfect for under-fives finding their confidence.

If you love a classic summer swim, Pt Erin Pool is unbeatable for that nostalgic open-air feel - picnic on the grass and a cool dip while you watch the sun glitter on the water, or enjoy the family spa pool if the summer breeze is getting up. Another classic is Parnell Baths, featuring New Zealand’s largest saltwater pool, and an interactive aqua playground for adventurous little ones!

For a family-friendly day out, Stanmore Bay combines indoor and outdoor play, splash pads and slides — ideal for a mix of ages.

And for those who prefer swimming indoors year-round, Albany Stadium Pool is a fully indoor facility with plenty to keep kids entertained.

Across the region, several other centres offer outdoor pool options too, including Ōtara, Papatoetoe, Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa and Birkenhead - ideal for long summer days in the sun.

Birkenhead Pools is open for summer. Come enjoy clear water, plenty of space, and a great spot to cool off.

Perfect for little ones

Make sure your young ones are properly prepared when swimming this summer.

Our toddler and learner pools are made for gentle, confidence-building fun. Warm, shallow water, fountains to chase, and colourful splash pads mean even the youngest swimmers can join in. Don’t forget to bring a waterproof swim nappy if your child is under three, remind bigger kids to take regular toilet breaks - then let the giggles and splashes begin.

Stay safe, stay sun smart

Children under four must be within arms reach of a caregiver when swimming at any Auckland Council pool.

Wherever you swim, remember that little ones need close supervision. Children under four must be within arm’s reach of a caregiver, and you need to ensure there are enough adults for the number of children you are supervising for their age group. Learn more about required adult-to-child ratios to help keep everyone safe in the water before you head to your nearest pool facility.

For increased safety, lifeguards are on duty at all council pools, and most outdoor locations offer shaded areas - perfect for a sunscreen top-up or a picnic break between swims.

Your summer, your way

This summer, chill by the pool, soak up the sun, enjoy a treat, and take a dip at Auckland Council pools.

After your swim, stretch out on the grass, grab an ice-cream from the kiosk, or head to the nearest park for one more burst of energy before home time. However you do it, there are plenty of options to make water play part of your summer — it’s affordable, active fun for the whole whānau.

Find your nearest pool, check opening hours and plan your visit on the Auckland Leisure website.
