A successful planting season has been completed, with 7,891 native plants recently established across 24 reserves throughout the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board area.

The community-led planting effort supports the board’s goals for a healthy environment, strong community spaces, and connected, vibrant neighbourhoods. These priorities guide work to create greener, safer, and more welcoming public spaces for everyone.

Chair Trish Deans says the results reflect a shared commitment to caring for local parks and natural habitats.

“Each planting season brings our community together and helps restore the health of our reserves. These improvements enhance biodiversity, support native birdlife and plants, and create greener, more vibrant places for people to enjoy.”

Benefits for the environment and the community

The planting season provides benefits far beyond the day itself:

  • Supporting nature: restoring native ecosystems strengthens biodiversity, protects soil and waterways, and provides healthy habitats for birds and other wildlife.
  • Community wellbeing: greener parks offer places to walk, play, relax, and connect with others, helping foster a sense of community.
  • Volunteer involvement: local residents of all ages contribute to planting and caring for reserves, building pride and connection to the area.

The board continues to work with environmental groups, schools, iwi, and volunteers to deliver long-term benefits, including healthier parks, more resilient green spaces, and stronger community connections.

Preparations are already underway for the next planting season, inviting more community members to get involved and help continue growing Devonport Takapuna’s green spaces.
