New pilot opens the door to conversations with Upper Harbour Local Board

Everyone in the Upper Harbour area is invited to take part in a new pilot initiative designed to strengthen relationships and create more meaningful dialogue.

Community Conversations with the Upper Harbour Local Board is a new approach that gives people dedicated time with board members in a relaxed, informal setting — with more opportunity for discussion than a deputation at a formal business meeting.

The first session will be held on 1 May from 10am, with a second opportunity on 29 October.

Sessions can be held online or face-to-face, making it easier to take part in a way that suits you.

The pilot is open to all residents, community groups, organisations and businesses across the Upper Harbour Local Board area. It aims to create space for open discussion, shared learning and stronger partnerships.

Chair Anna Atkinson says the initiative is about listening and building better connections.

“We know our community has a wealth of insight, ideas and lived experience. This is about creating the time and space to really listen.

“Business meetings are important, but they can feel formal and time limited. These sessions are more relaxed and allow for deeper conversations.”

The new format is designed to help people share their perspectives, experiences and ideas directly with elected members, while also gaining a better understanding of the board’s role and priorities.

By sitting down together in a less formal environment, board members and participants can explore common challenges, opportunities for collaboration and new ways of working together.

Atkinson says the benefits go beyond a single conversation.

“When we take the time to understand each other’s perspectives, we build stronger relationships.

“That leads to better collaboration, more trust and better outcomes for our community.”

Community Conversations aims to promote empathy and respect, helping everyone work towards common ground and shared goals for the local board area.

Anyone interested in booking a slot of up to 30 minutes on 1 May (from 10am) or 29 October can email upperharbourlocalboard@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz to secure a time.
