Can’t squeeze in a trip to the Islands this year? No worries. You don’t need a passport or a long-haul flight to find paradise, it’s right here in Point Chevalier.
Affectionately known by locals as The Chev, this coastal suburb in central Auckland is the perfect spot for a "staycation." Whether you’re saving pennies or just short on time, here is how to spend a perfect weekend exploring the best of Point Chev.
1. Beach days lazing on the Pontoon
Point Chev Beach is a local icon. At high tide, it’s a fave swimming spot in the city - be sure to swim out to the pontoon for a classic Kiwi summer jump, and you might make some new friends! Because the beach is calm most of the time, it’s an ideal spot for families or those wanting a tranquil dip.
Come along to catch a wave and enjoy the sun at Point Chevalier Beach.
Bring Fido
You can also bring your pooch to Point Chev beach at certain times – check the Auckland Council website for details, including off-leash opportunities! Your pup will find plenty of furry friends to play with (just don’t forget to pick up after your pet to ensure an enjoyable time for all beach and park goers).
2. Reach the Shore (No Car Required!)
The beauty of The Chev is how accessible it is. Skip the parking hunt and hop on a bus; regular services run right down Point Chevalier Road to the beach and all you need to hop onboard is your phone - download the AT app, tap and pay. If you're feeling active, the wide, multi-use footpaths are perfect for a stroll, scooter, or a family bike ride all the way to the water.
And if you’ve got two wheels, after the beach The Chev is your gateway to the city. You can easily jump onto the South Western or North Western Cycleways. These paths are safe, scenic, and offer a completely different perspective of Auckland’s landscape.
3. Play at Coyle Park
Young ones will love the playground at Coyke Park. With a flying fox, climbing rope set and ridable train there is so much fun to be have!
Perched at the tip of the peninsula, Coyle Park offers some of the best real estate in Auckland (for free!). If you brought the car and you get in quick, park in the free Auckland Council car park and you’re set.
For the kids: A massive playground and a legendary flying fox that will keep them entertained for hours before they’re asking for an ice cream from the Point Chev shops!
For the soul: Follow the walking path for panoramic views of Meola Reef and the Harbour Bridge. If you need a rest, there’s also plenty of space to sprawl out on the grass with a book and a blanket.
4. Walk the Wild Side at Eric Armishaw
If you prefer to get away from the hustle bustle of the crowds, head over to Eric Armishaw Reserve, tucked away just up the road from the main Point Chev beach. This spot features a tiny beach and beautiful urban wetland with a gorgeous path that for a moment makes you feel miles away from the city hustle.
Here, you can also explore the coastal walkway, and it's a prime spot for birdwatching or a sunset "gram”; at low tide the exposed seabed looks like an eerie desert of shells. Plus, the kids can play in the playground, and there’s ample picnic space, including picnic tables that overlook the water.
5. Get your thrift on and find treasures at Waiōrea CRC
Find your next treasure at Waiorea Community Recycling Centre.
Had your fill of the beach, or hit an overcast day? No problem! There's still plenty to do in The Chev. For starters, you can get your fill of thrifting, there’s plenty of thrift stores in Point Chev so you can shop sustainably, and located just opposite Motions Road (near the Zoo), the Waiōrea Community Recycling Centre is a must-visit. It’s not just about recycling; it’s a treasure hunter’s paradise. You can find incredible second-hand gems and vintage bargains while supporting a circular economy.
If you have any unwanted bits and bobs to drop off that you want to save from landfill, this CRC is also the place to go. They accept all kinds of unwanted items, mostly for free, or for a small fee they’ll also take trickier items like e-waste.
6. The "Big Three" on your Doorstep
We often forget how lucky we are to have world-class attractions in our backyard, but on your staycation, just down the road from the main Point Chev village and opposite the Waiōrea CRC, you’ll find:
Auckland Zoo: Say hi to the galápagos tortoises, pink flamingos, and cheeky monkeys.
MOTAT: Grab a vintage tram ride between the two sites and enter a nostalgic world of transport yesteryear, plus some cool science and innovations.
Western Springs Park: Take a slow lap around the lake and enjoy the birdlife (just watch out for the protective swans, geese and other territorial inhabitants!).
Lots of fun to be had at Western Springs Lake and playground for the whole whānau.
7. Cultured Community: TAPAC, the Library and Craft Markets
From salsa classes, to community theatre there is much to enjoy at TAPAC.
There’s always something going on at TAPAC (The Auckland Performing Arts Centre), nestled between Western Springs park and the Zoo, at the entrance of Western Springs College. At TAPAC you can catch live performances, such as a contemporary dance show or a play.
If you’re after a quieter afternoon, browse the latest bestsellers at the new Point Chev mini library located in Point Chev village, the perfect place to fuel your endless summer reading list. To go with the new library, there’s also a new garden and courtyard where you can sit and read a book under the shade of a tree.
And be sure to keep an eye on the Western Springs Community Hall. From craft markets to community workshops, there is always something happening that celebrates the creative spirit of the neighborhood. Check out local community event listings online to see what’s happening during your staycation.
