Franklin Local Board member, Malcolm Bell is stepping down after 12 years representing Franklin’s Wairoa subdivision.

Board chair Alan Cole reflected on their time working together.

“Over the past four terms, Malcolm has consistently and positively contributed to the Franklin Local Board and has been a dedicated advocate for Wairoa subdivision communities,” says chair Cole.

“He and I started on the board at the same time, and on a personal level, I will miss his collaborative approach and support. We all thank him for his exemplary service and wish him well.

“The next representative for Wairoa will have large shoes to fill,” he says.

During his time on the board, Malcolm represented Franklin on the Hūnua Quarry, Auckland Airport and Ardmore Airport Community committee.

He championed community-led environmental and sustainability initiatives, including planting at Hūnua Domain and improvements to Maraetai’s Ada Platts-Mills Reserve.

“Malcolm was always happy to get his hands dirty at community tree planting days throughout the Franklin area,” says chair Cole.

A passionate supporter of natural play, Malcolm served on the council’s play advocacy working group.

He also played a key role in progressing projects such as the Paparata Local Purpose Reserve’s development from a grazing paddock to a playground, Hūnua Village Green development and the Sunkist Bay concept plan – which continutes to inform the board’s investment in this space.

Malcolm’s commitment was evident through his frequent attendance and support for rural hall committees across Wairoa, including Ararimu, Hūnua, Kawakawa Bay, Ōrere Point, and Paparimu.

Nominations are now open until 31 March 2026 to fill the Wairoa subdivision seat on Franklin Local Board. Read more about it at Vote Auckland.
