Waiheke rangatahi will continue to have a safe and active place to connect on Friday nights thanks to a $3,000 grant from the Waiheke Local Board to the Waiheke Recreation Centre.

The funding supports the centre’s popular Friday Night Multisports programme. The free sessions give young people aged around 10 to 18 the chance to play basketball, volleyball, futsal and other games in a positive, smoke free environment.

The grant will help cover venue hire costs for a year, ensuring the programme remains accessible for all.

Waiheke Local Board Chair Kylee Matthews says investing in young people is a key priority.

“Our young people deserve safe, welcoming spaces where they can build confidence, stay active and connect with each other,” she says. “Friday Night Multisports is a fantastic community initiative that supports wellbeing and strengthens local connections. We are proud to support it.”
“This support helps us keep the programme free and open to all. It is about creating a space where young people feel safe, included and part of something positive.”

— Doris Aoina, Waiheke Recreation Centre Coordinator

Based at 9 Donald Bruce Road, Surfdale, the Waiheke Recreation Centre,  provides a drop-in space and activities for local youth throughout the week. The Friday multisports sessions are a highlight, offering a fun and healthy way to end the week.

With board backing secured, the team looks forward to welcoming more rangatahi through the doors on Friday nights.
