Fairburn Park in Ōtāhuhu now has a new volleyball court for fun, fitness, and community play.
A blessing ceremony on 27 February marked the official opening, celebrating this new space.
The court responds to growing demand for accessible and informal recreation spaces in the area.
The facility was originally planned for Murphys Park, but after careful assessment, it became clear the site wasn’t suitable. Health and safety concerns, limited space around the playground, and the need to protect the nearby playing field meant development there would have constrained recreational use.
An alternative location was needed to deliver a safe, practical facility.
Fairburn Park was chosen for its open space, central location near the Ōtāhuhu Pool and Leisure Centre, and easy access from Mason and Hall Avenues.
A total of $54,228 from the local board along with regional funding, helped bring the new volleyball court to the park.
Deputy chair and Ōtāhuhu local Christine O’Brien says, “I’m delighted to see volleyball coming to Ōtāhuhu. Demand for facilities continues to grow, and the David Lange Park Court has shown just how popular the sport is locally.
“This new court also secured some regional funding, and it’s encouraging to see wider Council support for enhancing our local amenities.
“Located by the Tōia complex, the court adds to the great range of recreation options already available. Staff have also ensured the design is flexible: the poles can be removed so the space can be transformed into seating or a stage area when needed. It was great seeing the court being used at the Ōtāhuhu Family Fun Day 2026.”
With this addition, Fairburn Park continues to grow as a hub for recreation, social engagement, and community connection - a place for everyone to enjoy.
