A 12-month pilot to improve parking in and around Onehunga Mall making it easier for people to visit local businesses, find parks, and reduce the number of parking-related fines due to people overstaying time limits is set to begin in April.
The Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board is working with Auckland Transport on the pilot which responds directly to feedback from local businesses, residents and visitors around the current parking arrangements not meeting the needs of the town centre.
The pilot will introduce new timed parking limits, including 60-minute parking (P60) along Onehunga Mall between Church Street and Grey Street, and 120-minute parking (P120) on surrounding streets including Princes Street, Church Street and Arthur Street.
Local Board Chair Debbie Burrows says the pilot is a positive step toward addressing ongoing parking challenges in the town centre.
"We're pleased to get underway with this parking pilot for Onehunga Mall to see if we can improve the current situation. The existing 30-minute restrictions are no longer working as intended, with a number of factors, including changes to the road layout, the January fire, and increased pressure on the town centre, all contributing to the issue.
"We're looking forward to working closely with business owners, customers, residents, the Onehunga Business Association and Auckland Transport to ensure we get the best outcome for Onehunga."
The existing P30 parking on Onehunga Mall between Princes Street and Church Street will remain in place. Additional wayfinding improvements will also be explored to help visitors more easily locate off-street parking options.
There will be no changes to mobility parking spaces, loading zones, bus stops or taxi stands. The pilot is expected to begin in late April 2026.
Throughout the trial, the community, visitors and local businesses will be invited to share feedback online and through local drop-in sessions.
Feedback will be reviewed during the pilot period, and adjustments may be made where needed to support better access to the area.
