This Saturday, Olympic Park will transform into a vibrant hub of laughter, teamwork and community spirit as Whau-lympics makes its debut.

The brand-new sports fun day invites Whau residents of all ages to take part in a packed programme of hilarious team challenges, inflatable obstacle courses, live performances, kids’ activities and delicious local food.

It’s not about winning, it’s about local pride

Proudly supported by Whau Local Board, Whau-lympics has been designed as an inclusive, high-energy event that celebrates participation over competition.

Whau Local Board chair Kay Thomas says Whau-lympics is about community spirit above all else.

“It’s not about winning - it’s about local pride. Whau-lympics is about bringing people together, having fun, and celebrating the energy and diversity of our community,” she says.

Inspired by the much-loved 70s and 80s television show Top Town, the event captures that same spirit of friendly rivalry, silliness and neighbourhood pride - where everyone can join in and no one takes themselves too seriously.

The ultimate sports day for every whānau

From babies to teens, parents to grandparents Whau-lympics is a day the whole whānau can enjoy together.

Little ones can explore play zones and gentle activities, kids can dive into obstacle courses, games and skill challenges, teens can test themselves with high-energy activities, and adults can jump into team challenges, fitness sessions or simply relax in the social spaces with great food on offer.

Whether you’re racing your mates, cheering from the sidelines, chasing tamariki (kids) between activities, or just there for the kai (food) and live performances there’s something for everyone.

Celebration of Whau’s shared heritage

The choice of venue adds special significance to the day. Olympic Park is located along Portage Road and straddles the Wai Tahurangi (Avondale) Stream, part of the historic Whau portage route that once connected the Waitematā and Manukau harbours.

By hosting the event at this place of historic movement and connection, Whau-lympics becomes not only a celebration of sport and play, but also a celebration of the area’s shared heritage and community spirit.

Adding to the excitement, Te Kura Maninirau - the first kaupapa Māori circus school will be on site, inviting attendees to try their hand at circus arts and experience something truly unique.

So gather your team, bring your neighbours, wear your colours.

Because this Saturday, Olympic Park becomes more than a field.

It becomes a celebration.

And everyone’s invited!
