Future park improvements are locked in for Maungakiekie-Tamaki, with the confirmation of land exchanges for Maybury Reserve (eastern end), Taurica Reserve and Torino Reserve.
The programme involves the strategic exchange of land to support housing development and improvements to the local park network and is a long-term partnership between Kāinga Ora the Tāmaki Regeneration Company and Auckland Council.
The land exchange programme provides an opportunity to reshape and improve the park network in Tāmaki, ensuring it meets the needs of current and future communities.
Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board Chair Debbie Burrows says the exchange is required to meet community needs.
“The shape and needs of our communities are changing, with increases to population and how the community uses public spaces, it’s important we’ve got better-connected, more usable and more enjoyable public spaces for all.
“We’ve already seen great benefits from previous land exchanges, with an additional 8,000m² of land added to Maybury Reserve on Taniwha Street, supporting the development of a new destination playground, along with improved open space and better park access,” says Debbie.
The programme was established through the Tāmaki Open Space Network Plan 2018, and identified opportunities to improve the quality, function and distribution of open space across the area.

Proof points: park improvements across Tāmaki from the land exchange program
The land exchange programme is already delivering improvements to parks across Tāmaki. Here are some recent examples:
- Taniwha Reserve: the exchange opened the park along Epping Street, providing a safe, off-road connection through to Eastview Reserve and Maybury Reserve, and improving access to the Glen Innes town centre. The new shared path from Line Road to Taniwha Street forms part of a wider planned greenway, which will eventually link Apirana Reserve to the Tāmaki Shared Path at Ōmaru Reserve.
- Maybury Reserve: land exchanges will enable the development of a large destination playground (opening July 2026) and additional park amenities in the coming years. The changes also create space for key connections, including a shared path link through to Elstree Avenue.
- Boundary Reserve: created new open space for a neighbourhood playground off Sanda Road, along with an expanded path network. The daylighting of the stormwater system in this area will also establish a naturalised stream environment.
- Johnson Reserve: soon to be added land parcels along Tripoli Road will accommodate a new playground and flat open space suitable for picnicking and informal gathering.
- Taurima Reserve: a new playground is under construction, alongside a half basketball court and upgraded pathways. Future land exchanges will further improve the park’s street frontage along the Anderson Avenue playground.
