Trying public transport for the first time? Coming back after a break? You’re not alone.
Public transport is widely recognised as one of the safest ways to get around, and Auckland Transport is continuing to invest in making it safer and more comfortable for everyone, at any time of the day or night.
Every day, thousands of people use buses, trains and ferries to get where they need to go; whether it’s commuting to work, getting to class, or heading out to explore the city. Across a year, that adds up to more than 26 million journeys.
We know feeling safe is key to a good journey. Here’s how we’re supporting you on the network.
People on the ground to help:
There are dedicated staff across the network ready to support you if you need it:
- Transport Officers travel across buses, trains and ferries. They check fares, support drivers and can step in if something isn’t right.
- They’re also trained in de-escalation and first aid.
Dedicated security staff are based at major stations and interchanges. - You may also see Train Managers, Māori Wardens, Safety Ambassadors and customer service staff, all focused on helping you feel safe and supported.
If you need help, don’t hesitate to approach them.
Technology working behind the scenes:
We’re also using technology to help keep the network safe:
- Auckland Transport has 6,000+ CCTV cameras in place across stations, stops and onboard services.
- A significant portion of our bus fleet now contain live CCTV cameras, allowing teams to respond more quickly, and liaise directly with emergency services in the unlikely event an incident were to happen onboard.
The AT Mobile app:
The AT Mobile app can also help you feel more confident when travelling:
- Check live departure times
- Track your service in real time
- Use “Share My Journey” to let friends or whānau follow your trip and get updates along the way
Reporting concerns:
If something doesn’t seem right, we want to hear about it.
You can report issues like broken lighting, unsafe behaviour or driving concerns by:
- Free texting 4030
- Using the Auckland Transport website
- Using the “report feeling unsafe” feature in the AT Mobile app
You can choose to report anonymously. Every report helps us improve the network.
Safety points at key locations

Safety points are bright orange help buttons located at major transport hubs.
If you’re feeling unsafe, pressing one will connect you directly to the Auckland Transport Operations Centre. From there, staff can:
- Stay on the line with you
- Monitor the area using CCTV
- Contact emergency services if needed
We know trying public transport can feel like a big step. Whether it’s your first trip or your first in a while, there’s support available to help you feel safe, confident and comfortable along the way.
