A new way to play has arrived at Tarnica Park in Northpark, with the installation of a Pot Shot Goal Module as part of the playground’s recent refresh.
This simple addition creates another opportunity for tamariki (children) and families to be active, have fun and enjoy the outdoors in their local park.
The Howick Local Board is always looking for ways to create more opportunities for informal play and movement across neighbourhood spaces, and features like this help bring more life and connection to local parks.
Chair Bruce Kendall says: “This 28-year-old playground was very much in need of an upgrade. I look forward to community feedback on these new and upgraded features, which will help guide our decision making for other changes to the playground”
Alongside the new play feature, the playground has received a range of minor renewal works to help keep the space safe, welcoming and enjoyable for the community.
The works included repairing and replacing worn or corroded fixtures and poles, installing a new swing set, replacing the playground module roof and slide, renewing timber decking, upgrading climbing features, replacing the wobbly bridge, and refreshing existing play equipment with cleaning, rust treatment, sanding, priming and repainting.
These improvements help extend the life of the existing playground while ensuring families can continue to enjoy a well-maintained space close to home.
The Local Board has also been listening to nearby residents' concerns about evening noise and damage at the park. In response, the Howick Local Board installed a solar-powered light in 2019 to improve visibility. Kendall says, “We've listened to our community and hope the light continues to deter anti-social behaviour, improve safety and make the park a more welcoming place for everyone.”
