Dogs and their owners now have more space to explore, exercise and socialise following the expansion of the dog park at Lloyd Elsmore Park in Pakuranga.

Funded by the Howick Local Board, the $65,000 project has significantly increased the size of the existing dog park and added features designed to make it more comfortable and accessible throughout the year.

Board chair Bruce Kendall says the improvements respond directly to feedback from the community.

“Local dog owners told us the old space was too small and their dogs needed more room to explore, play and stay active. We’re thrilled to have delivered this, and the positive response has already sparked requests for similar spaces across our area.

“Rather than separating large and small dogs, the extension has been designed to provide more room for everyone. The additional space offers natural shade, seating, and quieter areas for owners and dogs who prefer a relaxed walk or somewhere peaceful to sit, socialise and enjoy the park.”

The board’s investment has also funded a dog-friendly drinking fountain and water connection to make the space more comfortable and functional for years to come.

What’s new?

  • more space for dogs to exercise, explore and play
  • a new entrance, providing another way in and out of the park
  • natural shade and additional seating
  • quieter areas for dogs and owners
  • a dog-friendly drinking fountain
  • improved pathways and drainage
  • new signage to help visitors find and navigate the park.

Sustainability was also built into the project, with existing play equipment, tyres and other materials reused wherever possible to reduce waste.

The expanded park is already bringing people together. Shortly after it opened, local dog owners organised their own Cavoodles, Oodles & Small Dogs Meet-Up — an early sign of how much the new space is valued.

The dog park adds another reason to visit Lloyd Elsmore Park, one of East Auckland’s best-loved recreational destinations. The wider park is home to sports fields, walking tracks, playground and skate facilities, the refurbished Howick Pakuranga Netball Courts, Pool and Leisure Centre, Howick Historical Village and Howick Little Theatre.

With more room for dogs to roam and more opportunities for owners to connect, the expanded dog park is a welcome addition to this much-loved community space.
