About Whare Koa Māngere Community House
Whare Koa Māngere Community House was built in the early 1920s with a distinctive bungalow style showcasing bay windows, sun porch, built-in furniture, inglenook fireplace and a low-pitched roof
It was named Whare Koa ‘The Happy House’ and the Heritage Lounge still has the original wallpaper preserved today. Whare Koa is known for its cultural heritage value and enjoyed by various Māori and Pasifika communities, churches and local support services.
In 2016, PPG Industries NZ united with Whare Koa whānau for the Colourful Communities Project to restore the whare to its original exterior colour. Whare Koa also had internal refurbishments carried out recently and re-opened in August 2020.
Over the years, our local and vibrant Pasifika communities have run a variety of programmes and events promoting traditional arts, languages, cooking, music and dance as well as a free weekly community soup kitchen, Youth Pasifika dance group, Mamas Lounge and the very popular Mangere BikeFIT club. Our whānau proudly call Whare Koa their second home.
