Trees

Trees contribute to Auckland being a desirable place to live and are an important part of Auckland’s natural heritage and identity. Trees also:

  • conserve water
  • make our air breathable
  • absorb air pollution
  • support our slopes
  • make our streets attractive and liveable
  • support our health and wellbeing
  • protect our properties from erosion, and
  • provide habitat and kai for wildlife.

Quick facts

  • Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland's Climate Plan includes a principle to grow and protect our rural and urban ngahere (forest) to maximise carbon capture and build resilience to climate change.
  • In 2023 Auckland Council planted approximately 750,000 trees and plants across the region.
