Studio One Toi Tū has announced the five recipients of their 2017/2018 Creative Studio Residency, a group of immense creative talents and diverse artistic disciplines.
Taking up residency from this month will be Toni Gill (designer, printmaker, painter), Stjohn Milgrew (photographer, filmmaker) Cait Puatama Johnson (print artist), Jack Tilson (ceramic artist) and DANCE PLANT collective (contemporary dance collective).
These sought-after studio residencies offer invaluable support for established and emerging artists based in Auckland. Recipients of the residencies will receive ten months of studio space from November 2017 to August 2018, including 24-hour access to the Studio One Toi Tū precinct to help achieve their project goals.
Emerging artists
During the residency Toni Gill will develop a collection of works that celebrate and inspire the power of women, adorned with her native Filipino folklore and fauna. Her findings will be explored through Ukiyo-e inspired oil paintings, woodblock prints and hand-stitched tapestries.
Working with ceramic process and design, Jack Tilson will explore the potentials of clay sourced in the Auckland area creating a map of clay sources and exploring the intersection of technology and form.
Stjohn Milgrew is embarking on a multimedia project capturing the community that makes the Ponsonby Road and Karangahape Road area unique, sparking a reflection on our time of gentrification and urban renewal.
Cait Puatama Johnson will be pursuing a project in four mediums and how they coexist; printed publications, text works in physical space, text online and video that include spoken text.
Building on their debut work ‘Desire Line(s)’, DANCE PLANT collective intend to grow their collaborative, experimental choreographic practice that was forged through the making of this work, and open up the potential to regularly present their developments to the public through informal studio showings.
The artists’ residencies will culminate in an exhibition or showcase of the creative outputs of their residency.
