Life in the Bike Lane – Sam Learmonth

Publish Date : 15 Jan 2018

Lawyer Sam Learmonth regularly rides around Herne Bay and the waterfront, via Westhaven. He tells us about his journey and why he rides a bike in Auckland.

When did you start riding a bike as a way to get around (as opposed to just recreationally)?

Regularly two years ago.

Why do you choose to ride a bike as a way to get around?

Enjoyed the exercise and it is much easier to get around / places to see with new cycleways and shared paths that have been built around Auckland.

Tell us what you like most about the Herne Bay – Waterfront ride?

The scenery and great places to stop along the way including great cafes and bars.

Where else do you like to ride in Auckland?

The Waterview Shared Path.

For anyone considering biking in Auckland for the first time, what would you say to encourage them to start?

Try out the cycling programmes put on by Auckland Transport and give it a go – there are a lot of cycle paths now that are totally separate from general traffic so you can ride safely without fear of impatient drivers.

What kind of bike do you usually ride?

A commuter bike.

Is there anything else you'd like to add about riding your bike in Auckland?

Auckland has some fantastic places to ride and a lot of the paths connect with train stations so if you get tired, there's an easy way to get back!
