Almost $50,000 has been approved by Papakura Local Board for placemaking initiatives for the town.
The money comes from a $99,000 underspend on safety initiatives identified in a report on the town centre.
Some of the recommendations were put in place without the need for board funding so staff recommend five grants totalling $49,000 for town centre placemaking, and that options for the remaining $50,000 be discussed this month.
The grants were:
- Papakura Business Association, $3500, Proud Papakura proud campaign
- Rosehill College, $5000, town centre beautification
- Papakura High School, $5000 town centre beautification
- The Corner, $25,500, increased programming
- Papakura Business Association, $10,000, streetscaping and beautification
The Proud Papakura Proud campaign is a collaborative project supporting and promoting a safe, healthy and culturally-diverse community in Papakura.
The two schools take part in the annual town centre beautification initiative. The grants will see students receive driver licensing programmes in return for their time to support projects.
The Corner will increase its programming at its youth-led creative space in O’Shannessey St. The board funded its establishment last year and a six-month pilot. The money will enable a further increase to the opening hours and programming.
Papakura Business Association will undertake further streetscaping and beautification in the town centre to improve perceptions of safety and make the town an attractive place to shop, live, work and play.
