Mayoral Conservation Awards 6
Te Pu-a Nga Maara winner of Youth Award

Every day across the region, caring and selfless people are involved in positive environmental actions that contribute to the conservation of our environment for no other reason than the fact they care.

At last night’s second annual Mayoral Conservation Awards, six category winners from across the region were honoured for their contributions in restoring and protecting our natural environment.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff congratulated the award winners and finalists and thanked everyone who has volunteered to protect and enhance Auckland’s environment.

“Collectively, our conservation volunteers and community groups give more than 250,000 hours a year of their time to look after our environment and make our region a better place for generations to come.”

“It’s great to recognise the immense contribution they make to conservation efforts across Auckland.”

Brett Butland, Pest Free Auckland Project Director says, “The awards recognise exceptional environmental and conservation initiatives in the region, acknowledging community groups and individuals who play an important part in the conservation story.”

“The decision of the judges was difficult as so many worthy groups have contributed so much with their can-do attitudes and incredible contributions to preserving our biodiversity; people are now starting to see the results of community conservation,” he adds.

Winners have painstakingly provided time and talent to plant, trap, clear and weed to protect this region’s riverbanks, beaches and bush, throwing a lifeline to many species of plants and animals, helping Auckland on its way to becoming Pest Free by 2050.
