Howick library hours changing to reflect customer use

Hours at several libraries in the Howick Local Board area are changing to better suit customer habits.

From 1 December Howick, Highland Park and Pakuranga libraries will operate with the following opening hours:

  • Monday to Thursday - 9am to 6pm
  • Friday - 9am to 5pm
  • Saturday and Sunday - 10am to 4pm

Hours at Botany Library are not changing and will remain as follows:

  • Monday to Wednesday - 9.30am-5:30pm
  • Thursday and Friday - 9.30am-8pm
  • Saturday - 9.30am to 5.30pm
  • Sunday - 10am to 5.30pm

Kim Taunga, Head of Community Libraries South & East says hours are regularly assessed to make sure they best align with how customers are using these libraries.

“What we found was that those extra few hours over normal standard hours, which the local board funded, attracted very few customers.”

Libraries across the city are funded for standard hours and until now, the board has funded extended time at its libraries.

Howick Local Board Chair Adele White says the board supported the recommendation to reduce hours as part of its annual work programme discussions with libraries.

The services and programmes currently offered at the libraries will not be affected by the change in operating hours.

“We are really lucky to have four fantastic libraries in our area and this just standardises hours to reflect when people are using them.

“All library lovers can be assured that the same services and programmes offered today will continue and we are also delighted our valued library teams are not affected, “she says.

Hours at the Botany Library are not changing as it is located within the Botany Town Centre which requires tenants to be open for certain hours so the board will continue to fund those hours.
