Sub14 The Naming Of Aotearoa New Zealand (Until 1840)

Historian Phil Sai-Louie presents an illustrated talk on how the names of Aotearoa New Zealand came about.

We look at how the Māori gave names to the places in Aotearoa – often bringing names from their former homeland in the Pacific. Later European explorers such as Tasman, Cook and others bestowed further names.

Find out the stories behind some of this country`s placenames.
