‘ie, the Samoan word for cloth, holds profound meaning. It clothes us, covers us, and reveals us. Through cultural practices, ‘ie toga and siapo connect us to our past, marking important milestones like births, weddings, funerals, and the act of ifoga. It drapes us in service, accompanies us as we siva, and adorns us in our Sunday best.

Our ancient tatau, a permanent covering on the body, identifies us as a people and symbolizes our connection to Samoan heritage.

This exhibition explores materiality and transformation, upcycling fibres and objects to create new works inspired by Samoa’s rich tapestry of textile traditions. Abstract motifs drawn from siapo and tatau patterns are reimagined in a contemporary context, offering fresh perspectives on ‘ie.

Alongside Linda Va‘aelua’s textiles, a powerful video installation by Teuila Va‘aelua examines themes of connection and disconnection, identity, and belonging through the eyes of a young New Zealand-born Samoan. Together, these works invite viewers to reflect on the enduring significance of ’ie in shaping cultural and personal identity.
