Join us for a talk from art historian and curator Liz Eastmond on the arts and feminism in conjunction with Modern Women: Flight of Time exhibition.
Liz will talk about the background to setting up the groundbreaking paper on women artists at Auckland University in 1981, with a focus on her involvement in the women’s movement. Constructing new histories was exciting, but it had its challenges; only a handful of slides of works by women were initially available, for example.
Liz remembers projects associated with collectives like FAN (Feminist Art Networkers) and ANTIC, a journal of arts and literature. She describes her later involvement in running Tivoli, a gallery/bookstore where talks, films and performances were held. Her early research on Frances Hodgkins and Alexis Hunter continues, she explains, alongside recent projects including the exhibition Bad Ambassador by the collective et al. (2022) and The State of Palestine (2023).
