The Kotuku Quintet returns to the stage this year with a programme based around a Mozart piano concerto and drawing inspiration from the celebration of Matariki in a brand new work. Mozart’s Piano concerto in C KV 415 is one of three composed in 1782 in Vienna. Composed not only for concert use they were also for performance at home, as the wind parts could easily be dispensed with.
The concert will also feature the premiere of a new work by the quintet’s pianist, Louise Webster, written to celebrate Matariki. Frank Bridge’s Phantasy for Piano Quartet in F sharp minor rounds out the programme. Written in 1910, this is one of his most characterful early works, showing the influence of Brahms and Bridge’s love of French Romanticisim.
