Explore your whakapapa through taonga, kōrero tuku iho, and mātauranga Māori as we honour the rising of Matariki.

Hosted by our Mātauranga Māori Team, this event brings together guided tours, taonga spotlights, kōrero from mātanga and help from our research specialists to inspire you to begin (or continue) your whakapapa Māori research journey.

A powerful opportunity to connect with taonga, deepen your understanding of your Whakapapa Māori, and discover the research support available here in Research Central - Te Wāhi Rangahau ki te Puku.

What to expect on the day:

  • Keynote speaker - to be confirmed
    Insights on Matariki.

  • Rangatahi poets - live performances
Emerging Māori voices sharing spoken‑word pieces on identity and whakapapa.

  • Taonga spotlights
Rarely displayed taonga from our heritage collections, each with deep historical connection.

  • Research Centre tours
Showcasing archival tools and resources that support whakapapa and Māori research.

  • Resources and 1:1 support from Māori specialists
For those on specific whakapapa or whenua research journeys.

  • Mixed reality Te Tiriti experience
An immersive way to engage with the stories of Te Tiriti ki Tāmaki.
