‘Auckland’s Fruitbowl’ explores the legacy of fruit growing in the Rodney District, once a major supplier of fresh produce to Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland and beyond.
Early settlers planted fruit trees for personal use, but the region’s mild climate soon supported commercial orcharding. By the mid-1800s, growers such as the Morrisons of Red Bluff, were building thriving local and international businesses.
Visitors will see how innovation shaped the industry, including Alexis Migounoff, who used the Poorman’s Orange to produce his renowned Lemora Wine - a story connected to Governor Grey, whose rare fruit trees on Kawau Island helped spread new varieties in the region.
