Media advisory: Webinar this Thursday ‘Council rates - here’s how it works’

Publish Date : 18 Aug 2025

Hear from the Auckland Council team on how rates are set and ask your questions at an upcoming webinar.

An Auckland Council hosted webinar on Thursday, 21 August, will take interested Aucklanders through how rates setting works.

The council charges rates on properties as one of the ways to fund the services it provides for Aucklanders. It sets the level of rates based on an annual plan for what it will spend money on.

“This year, rates setting coincided with the three-yearly update of property capital values (CVs) that enable us to fairly share rates across 630,000 Auckland ratepayers,” says Auckland Council group chief financial officer Ross Tucker.

“This webinar will take people through how rates work and what factors contribute to property owners receiving increases below, and above, the 5.8 per cent change there was for an average value residential property.”

Areas like Rodney and Franklin are two areas in particular which have had above average rates increases as a result of the rating valuations for properties in those areas performing above the average for Auckland region.

This event is an opportunity to hear how rates are set and to ask questions.
