Strong performance pushes Auckland Council to 90% of savings target

Publish Date : 11 May 2026

Auckland Council has achieved $77.6 million in savings to date this financial year, reaching 90% of its $86 million annual target.

This year’s target represents a $20 million increase on last year’s $66 million goal, reflecting the council’s commitment to ongoing financial discipline. The target will rise again next year by a further $20 million to $106 million.

The result (to 31 March 2026) reflects the council’s continued focus on disciplined financial management, long‑term cost reductions and targeted revenue growth. Of the total savings, $50 million are enduring, with a further $27 million delivered through one‑off initiatives and careful expenditure control.

Desley Simpson, Deputy Mayor and Chair of the Value for Money Committee, says the results demonstrate the council’s commitment to Aucklanders.

“This is a strong result and shows that we are doing exactly what Aucklanders expect of us – managing ratepayer money carefully and making every dollar count.

“We set ambitious savings targets because they are necessary, and it’s pleasing to see staff and the organisation delivering on them. With targets increasing from $66 million last year to $86 million this year, and rising again to $106 million next year, it’s clear we are pushing ourselves to go further.”

The council delivered an additional $9.7 million in savings during the third quarter through higher non-rates revenue and operational efficiencies.

“These savings aren’t about cutting services - they’re about delivering them smarter with practical, sensible changes that reduce costs,” Cr Simpson says.

The council remains focused on delivering the remaining $8 million required to meet the annual target. This work continues against a backdrop of rising service demand, inflationary pressures, and increasing fuel and operating costs.

Cr Simpson says the final stretch will require continued discipline.

“We’re in a challenging financial environment, just like households and businesses across Auckland. But we are committed to staying the course and ensuring the council continues to operate efficiently, transparently, and responsibly.”
