The much-loved Sandspit Reserve Playground in Waiuku has had a long‑awaited upgrade, and it’s proving to be a hit with the locals, many of whom joined Franklin Local Board for the grand reopening on 5 July.
The upgrades are in keeping with the playground’s nautical theme, and include a tall climbing net similar to a ship’s rigging, a new masthead with a crow’s nest, a rocking dinghy, swings and a slide.
A new basketball hoop has also been installed, while nearby existing tables and stools have been painted.
Landscaping was another important part of the changes – sandy spaces have been designed for optimal fort and castle building, and are sure to fire the imagination of children using the playground.
Franklin Local Board Deputy Chair Jill Naysmith says the upgrades have given the playground a new lease of life. “It’s great to see our local children exploring and enjoying the new equipment,” she says. “Ensuring our local parks meet the needs of our community is a high priority for the board.”
