Symonds Street Cemetery in Grafton is one of Auckland’s most historic and unusual public reserves. As well as having grassy open spaces and native forest, it is Auckland’s oldest official cemetery and the final resting place of some of our city’s founders.
Notable graves include those of Captain William Hobson, the first governor of New Zealand and founder of Auckland, and Archibald Clark, who was Auckland’s first mayor and is thought to be responsible for much of the planting around the cemetery.
