Helping west Auckland's homeless

A word from Penny Hulse, Waitākere Ward Councillor

Recently, the Salvation Army released an important, albeit incredibly worrying, report on the situation faced by homeless people in west Auckland.

Homelessness is one of our most pressing societal issues and the report, which makes for sad reading, makes it clear we must do better – particularly out west, where we have the biggest waiting list for social housing in New Zealand.

Thankfully, it’s not a totally depressing picture. Auckland Council has $250,000 to support emergency housing providers and we are working with the Ministry of Social Development to increase the number of emergency houses available.

The council also has $110,000 to support other initiatives that aim to resolve homelessness. The work being done out west by our amazing community providers is truly outstanding and these groups are continuing our proud tradition of working together to help those in need.
